The Bellarmine basketball program has added a new game to the 2021 slate.
The Bellarmine basketball program’s first season at the Division I level hasn’t been everything they thought it would be. Due to positive COVID cases both inside their own program and their opponents, they haven’t played a game since dropping a 77-68 decision in their home opener against Chattanooga on December 9th.
Since their schedule has opened up, head coach Scott Davenport and his staff have been looking for an opponent to play and they found one that the group is somewhat familiar with: Notre Dame.
Last year, the Knights traveled to South Bend to play an exhibition against the Fighting Irish, losing 61-51. This year, Notre Dame is 2-4 (0-1 ACC) but the team is battle tested. ND was set to play Syracuse before a positive case in the Orange program forced them to postpone that game.
Both of the schools faced Duke earlier in the season with the Knights losing 76-54 and the Irish losing 75-65. Both teams have struggled this season but could be getting better.
What you can expect
Bellarmine has been without senior captain CJ Fleming who was slated to make his debut before the Knights paused activity. Notre Dame has played quality opponents all season and might be better than their record indicates.
Bellarmine comes into the matchup only playing three games (1-2) and the team is ready to get back into action. They were scheduled to play a home and home series with Middle Tennessee and a road game against Miami (OH) but the games were subsequently cancelled. Unless the Knights schedule another opponent, this will be the last game against a D1 team until they begin ASUN play.
According to the news release on both schools’ websites, the game will not be televised or have tickets sold due to the late nature of the scheduling. Fans can catch the game on the radio or follow along on Twitter. The game is scheduled to tip-off at noon on Wednesday.
