If 2020 could be jammed packed into one day it would probably feel a lot like today has for Louisville basketball and Louisville football fans. From the moment the sun went up on Monday, if there was news it was probably related to the city of Louisville. And if it was bad news, it most definitely was coming from UofL. Thankfully Dre Davis was here to save the day being named the ACC men’s basketball Freshman of the week.
The award comes following Louisville basketball’s blow out win over Western Kentucky, which feels like an eternity ago.
Dre Davis led the team in scoring, dropping 21 points as his energy & defense were huge catalysts for the run away victory. According to the official release from the University of Louisville, he was the first freshman to score 20-plus points in a game since V.J. King scored 24 against Virginia in 2017 and the first freshman to win the award since David Johnson did back in January.
With Louisville basketball on pause, it’s a shame we won’t get to see Dre Davis build on the momentum he had established over the Cards first four games. Especially considering Louisville was set to go up against #4 Wisconsin on Wednesday – in a game we now know won’t happen.
On the season Davis has scored in double-digits on three occasions (all in the last three games) and currently is second in scoring to Carlik Jones, averaging 12.5 points per game. He’s also connected on 39 percent of his three point attempts this season.
Dre Davis’ play has been one of the many surprising things about Louisville basketball’s 4-0 start and it’s great to see his tough play rewarded early by the ACC.
Let’s also not forget that Dre will soon be joined at the University of Louisville by his younger brother, Tae Davis, who committed to the Cards on Saturday.
It’s been a big week for the Davis’.
