While you were sleeping Jordan Nwora was cooking.
Fresh off of winning an NBA title in his rookie season for the Milwaukee Bucks, Jordan Nwora has made the trek across the world to Tokoyo for the Summer Olympics. Playing for the Nigerian National Team in his first Olympics, Nwora has quickly become a much-needed go-to scorer.
It hasn’t taken Nwora long to get comfortable playing in his new role, case in point his performance against Germany.
After appearing in only five games (playing 31 minutes total) in the NBA Playoffs, Nwora played 23 minutes for Nigeria in game one of the Olympics against Australia and looked fresh. Despite losing by 17, Nwora played an important role scoring 10 points on 4/12 shooting, including 2/6 from deep.
Hello, Jordan
That clearly gave him much more confidence as he came out firing against a seasoned Germany team. With the rest of his team struggling to score, Nwora came off the bench and lit the scoreboard up dropping a game-high 33 points. That was good enough to be the second-highest scoring outing in the Olympics thus far.
As Louisville fans have seen for years, Nwora’s outburst was fueled by his outside shooting. After hitting just 33% of his threes in game one, Nwora went 7/12 from deep, including 4/6 in the second half. He also led his team in rebounding, grabbing 7 boards, and finished with a game-high +35.
In just his first Olympics, Nwora has excelled against top talent, finding his shot from deep comfortably. While Nigeria has yet to win a game, dropping this one 99-92, Nwora has been one of the best players on the world’s top stage. He’s done everything and more, leading the team in scoring coming off of the bench while being one of the top shot blockers, passers, and leaders in steals. The all-around game that many questioned if Nwora could ever develop has been in full blossom against two top teams.
It doesn’t appear that Nigeria will be in a place to advance to the 8-team knockout round but it doesn’t take away from Nwora’s Olympic start. They’ll need even more from Nwora, and the countless NBA players on their roster (Josh Okogie, Jahlil Okafor, Miye Oni, Chimezie Metu) if they are to move on.
First, they’ll have to start by winning against Italy on July 31st. From there they’ll need quite a bit of help. Regardless I’m here for the Jordan games.
