Since June of 2018, Louisville football has been searching for a stadium naming rights deal.
On Monday, the Louisville board of trustees approved a deal that will begin in 2023. Louisville will be playing in L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.
From its opening in the fall of 1998, Papa John’s founder and owner John Schnatter owned the naming rights to Cardinal Stadium. However, on June 13, 2018, former UofL president Neeli Bendapudi announced that the university would be removing the Papa John’s moniker after Schnatter used a racial slur in a board meeting.
Since that time, rumors have swirled about stadium naming rights agreements but UofL did not seal the deal until Monday.
L&N, a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution located in Louisville, already has the naming rights to Louisville’s volleyball arena. Louisville women’s volleyball has played in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena since 2019.
Established in 1954, L&N Federal Credit Union was founded to serve the L&N Railroad workers in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1982, the credit union converted to a Multi-Group Charter and went on to serve various businesses throughout Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and Tennessee. In 2004, the credit union changed to a Community Charter.
Today, L&N services Louisville, Southern Indiana, and the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area and claims assets of more than $1.9 billion.
