Louisville football is always in search of the next man up under center. Could 2024 QB Deuce Adams fit the bill? A look under the hood of a rapidly ascending prospect.
The recruiting front has been quiet for a while now after a torrid hot start for Louisville football (Landing blue-chip five-star EDGE TJ Capers in early January) in Jeff Brohm and the staff’s first full recruiting class.
It was only a matter of time until things heated back up in #FlyVille24’s favor, and the class could soon be landing its signal caller.
Enter three-star quarterback Deuce Adams, hailing from Canyon High School in New Braunfels, TX. Immediately following a three-day visit with the Cards, Adams set a commitment date for April 5th.
Adams is coming off of a highly productive Junior season, passing for 3007 yards, 34 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions while completing 66.9% of his pass attempts. Since making his varsity debut during his sophomore season, he has not only made a giant leap in statistical production but has also shown tremendous growth as a passer and leader of the offense.
What the film says:
At 6’2 and 175lbs, Adams possesses the requisite size and physical tools to play the position at the next level.
When watching his film, his baseball background is immediately apparent in his throwing motion. He is able to utilize multiple throwing angles to get the ball out under pressure or in off-platform situations. The ball comes out of his hand effortlessly and he delivers a consistent and catchable ball to his receivers.
He already displays great touch and accuracy and has enough arm strength to threaten all levels of the field. He keeps his eyes downfield even with heavy pressure, is always looking to pass first, and is athletic enough to extend plays with his legs and scramble for extra yards when needed.
While he has good enough physical tools, he lacks an elite, top-end trait. He is mobile, but not a consistent threat on designed runs. He has a strong enough arm, but I come away wishing some of his passes over the middle came with more velocity.
Additionally, Adams will need time to develop a better feel in the pocket before starting at the college level. I find that he drifts too much when there isn’t pressure to warrant it and he tends to bail on the pocket too early.
All that being said, he is a young and developing player who is oozing with talent and gives me no reason to believe he cannot be a high-level starter for the Cards. His positives pair very nicely with the air-raid style of offense Brohm runs and it’s easy to see why the staff is pursuing him.
His weaknesses can be smoothed out once he can get into a college weight room and gets more experience under his belt. Given his growth from sophomore to junior year, I would not be surprised in the slightest to see a monster senior season for Adams.
Keys to his recruitment:
Brohm and staff had Adams on campus the last week of March for a visit, and it seems that the Cards will be getting the last word leading up to his rapidly approaching commitment.
His recruitment currently feels like a three-horse race between Louisville, Boston College, and Baylor, but I like the Cards’ chances.
Beating out in-state Baylor will be a challenge, but it’s easy to see how Adams’ skillset translates to Brohm’s offense.
Landing a popular Texas native at quarterback may also help the staff to open up the pipeline to the Lonestar State, similar to Pierce Clarkson helping draw in other California prospects or Khalib Johnson opening up the relationship with multiple high-caliber prospects from his former high school in Clay-Chalkville, Alabama.
Adams has already received a crystal ball in Louisville’s favor at the time of writing this article.
