Louisville football has landed a dynamic transfer with a familiar name.
Scott Satterfield and the Louisville football program have landed another transfer ahead of the 2021 season, their third in the class.
After landing a QB turned wide receiver, the Cards staff decided that landing another QB to play QB was of the utmost importance. Their hard-work recruiting and evaluating paid off as Luke McCaffrey announced his intent to finish his career as a Cardinal.
The last name may sound familar to you, and yes you’d be right by guessing he’s the younger brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey. As well as the son of NFL legend, Ed McCaffrey.
Following a two-year stint at Nebraska, McCaffrey was one of several quarterbacks to hit the transfer portal earlier this offseason. During two seasons, he appeared in 11 games, throwing for 608 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also ran for 530 yards, caught 2 passes for 12 yards, and scored 4 times on the ground.
McCaffrey was a hot commodity on the recruiting cycle back in 2019. Rated as a four-star dual threat quarterback and the 257th best player nationally by 247 Sports. He chose Nebraska over Michigan, Ohio State, Washington, Colorado, and others.
What Luke McCaffrey brings to Louisville
His decision to transfer caught many surprise, especially after head coach Scott Frost was quoted as saying ““There’s no doubt in my mind Luke McCaffrey is the future around here.”
His career certainly didn’t go the way he expected. There were plenty of big moments, including the 122 rushing yards and 2 TD performance against Illinois. As well as plenty of lows. McCaffrey finished with a 1-1 record as a starter, and Nebraska went 4-7 overall in games he appeared in.
Some rumored that programs like Florida, BYU, and Memphis amongst others could be interested. But in the end, it was the Louisville program that sealed the deal. Louisville football’s decision to hold off on adding a “true quarterback” seemed like a head-scratcher heading into spring. But after landing McCaffrey the timing makes much more sense.
McCaffrey will likely compete with Evan Conley, TJ Lewis, and walk-on Tyler Jensen for snaps at backup in 2021 but could see snaps in an “athlete” type role. The Cards desperately need more experienced bodies in the QB room, and adding an athlete like McCaffrey could be a game-changer.
In talking with new quarterbacks coach Pete Thomas earlier this month, we know that competition will be a big part of spring practice. The Cards struggled with turnovers and adding more competition can help to push all players to improve.
The news of McCaffrey’s transfer to Louisville came just hours after freshman cornerback Marqui Lowery officially entered the transfer portal.
