Who has the best burger in the 502?
If there is one thing that I love in this world, it is food. Who doesn’t like a good burger as well? We’ve all watched as the city we love has become a top destination for food right before our eyes. Louisville has a little bit of each culture within the dinning scene. I like to think Louisville has a wide variety for one the most classic dishes; the hamburger. I’ve searched far and wide for the top burger and now it’s only right that I share with all of you my five favorite burger spots in Louisville.
1 – Mussel & Burger Bar
If you are looking for a burger with good quality of beef, Mussel &Burger Bar is the place. My favorite spot for a burger. I like the BBQ Burger, it is a burger topped with fried cheese curds, beer-battered onion rings, bourbon BBQ sauce, coleslaw, and pickles. Get that with the sweet potato fries with the smoked pineapple dipping sauce. My oh my..
There is two locations in the city. 7th street downtown and Taylorsville Rd in the Stony Brook Shopping Center.
2 – Ollie’s Trolley
Whenever I see a brown paper bag covered in grease, 9 times out of 10 it is most likely from Ollie Trolley.
Ollie’s is old school as it gets. I always go with an Ollie Burger. That is a burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and cheese along with the famous secret tangy sauce. The seasoned fries are fantastic as well.
Ollie’s Trolley is located downtown on 3rd street just by Spalding University. They are cash only. No seating, Get yourself an Ollie Burger!

3 – 80/20 @Kaelin’s Restaurant
I feel like 80/20 does not get talked about enough. Going here is like taking a time machine back into the 1950’s. Old school look with a classic burger and milkshake. Really good onion rings as well.
80/20 is located on Newburg Road.
4 – Dizzy Whizz Drive-In
Dizzy Whizz is another place I think that does not get talked about enough. I like the Whizz Burger. A double cheese burger with all of the fixings along with tarter sauce. One of the best. I love me some onion rings with a burger. Dizzy Whizz has some of the best. They are also known for their milkshake and ice cream bar. My favorite is the chocolate milkshake and the peanut butter milkshake.
Dizzy Whizz is located not far from UofL and Spalding. Right on St Catherine.
5 – Ken Bowl Lanes
You might be thinking, a bowling alley? Yep that’s right. I was shocked myself how good of a burger Ken Bowl has. I like the double cheese burger with the chili cheese fries. I would go to this bowling alley just for their burger. Old school once again with the fixings. Juicy and tasty!
Honorable mentions:
Mark’s Feed Store-BBQ Burger
Week-End Burgers
Old Louisville Tavern
Emmy Squared-Le Big Matt Burger
Well. There you have it. Some of my favorite spots for a hamburger in the city. I look forward to providing more content for State Of Louisville. I believe Louisville is one of the best cities for food. Hope you give these places a try!
Absolutely love the inclusion of Ollie’s. I would have included Six Forks and Burger Boy. Double Flame burgers on Valley Station Rd is another home run.
Love this. I have a dear friend, Sally, whose son Finnley is having major heart surgery today at Norton Children’s hosp. He LOVES good food, especially a good piece of meat, fries, and a shake, chocolate or peanut butter. I don’t ask for me, but on behalf of this family. Would any of these restaurants be willing to give gift cards to Sally McCullum, Mom, for Finnley, her seven year old son, who after this surgery will be awaiting a heart transplant at Norton? He is in room 430. Norton downtown.
Am I too old-school Louisville to firmly believe WW Cousins should be on this list somewhere? (Also love the Ollie’s inclusion!)
You all nuts the best burgers are 5 guys by far
Christi’s Cafe burgers out valley station right next to derby city pizza….They have really good burgers to.
Sorry, but the burgers at Ollie’s Trolley and Dizzy Whizz are two of the worst things I’ve ever eaten. The only reason to list them in such an article as this is nostalgia, not taste.
You should definitely check out Game Restaurant
2295 Lexington Rd
Jeff’s Burgers has closed their restaurant, but has a food truck. I think they have the Best Burgers in town! Wish they were still open!
Try Double Flame Burgers on Valley Station. One of the best ever.
Omitting Sidebar is a definite mistake (I realize they only reopened recently, but still). The burgers at Ollie’s Trolley and Dizzy Whizz were not only disappointing, but among the worst things I’ve ever eaten. They could only be included in such a list for nostalgia, not for actual taste.
