Football season is getting a little longer in the city of Louisville thanks to the expansion of the United Football League.
A new team takes the throne at Lynn Family Stadium — and this time, it’s American football. Louisville adds the Louisville Kings to its growing list of professional sports teams. The city has hosted professional football before, most notably the Louisville Fire, an arena football team that played at Brown–Forman Field in Freedom Hall. Unfortunately, that team lasted only eight seasons, beginning in 2001 and folding in 2008.

The Louisville Kings will look to capitalize on a thriving sports town that has been eager for more professional representation since the days of the Kentucky Colonels. The United Football League saw a decline in viewership and attendance during the 2025 season. To counter this, league officials decided to relocate several teams in hopes of boosting interest and growing the league in future seasons.

The league hopes to create a smaller but more energetic environment for fans. A compact venue offers better sightlines, improved attendance opportunities, and a more intimate overall experience.
Another key factor is cost. Renting large facilities like Ford Field in Detroit is expensive, so the UFL aims to reduce expenses by moving into smaller markets and venues while maintaining a strong fan experience.
What are the colors and the story behind the name?
With the expansion team officially announced, the biggest question is: What are the colors?
The Louisville Kings are breaking from local tradition by adopting a neon green and evergreen color scheme — a bold and modern look that departs from Louisville’s familiar red, blue, and purple sports identities. Historically, teams like the Kentucky Colonels embraced red, white, and blue, while Louisville City FC chose purple to unite both local college fan bases, symbolically blending red and blue.
The name “Louisville Kings” draws inspiration from the city’s deep French roots — specifically its namesake, King Louis XVI of France — as well as from Louisville’s royal connection to horse racing as the home of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the prestigious Triple Crown.
What does the United Football League mean for the city?
Adding another professional franchise to Louisville’s résumé can only strengthen the city’s reputation and open doors for future opportunities. While many still hope a basketball team will arrive next, it’s up to us — the city’s residents and sports fans — to support the Kings from the beginning.
