Louisville football star Malik Cunningham is a top-50 player in the country according to ESPN staff writers.
Louisville football star quarterback is rated the 47th-best player in the country to begin 2022.
That’s how a group of ESPN.com writers tabbed him in a Wednesday morning article.
“Who topped the Total QBR rankings in the ACC last season?” asks ESPN.com. “It wasn’t Kenny Pickett, or Sam Hartman, or Devin Leary, or Tyler Van Dyke: It was the kinetic Cunningham, who threw for 2,941 yards, rushed for 1,031, and produced 39 combined scores. You can’t take your eyes off of him.”
Cunningham is set to begin a potentially historic season for Louisville football. He can break dozens of career statistical records in his attempt to right the ship for Scott Satterfield in his senior season.
Most notably, Cunningham can pass Lamar Jackson for career rushing touchdowns.
Cunningham moves up to 47th from 65th on last year’s list.
Still, he likely has a lot more to prove. He is the 12th-ranked QB in college football, according to the list, and 4th among his ACC peers. He sits behind NC State’s Devin Leary, Wake’s Sam Hartman, and Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.
Cunningham also falls in place behind Kentucky’s Will Levis, who moves to 33rd after being unranked on the 2021 list.
There are other names like Stetson Bennett, KJ Jefferson, and AT Perry that give pause to the validity of the list. Still, it will ultimately be up to Cunningham to prove himself worthy of higher marks by helping his team to a better record in 2022.
