Louisville football returns to Miami pipeline for impact defender

Four-star linebacker Stanquan Clark officially made his college decision. What the film says he’ll bring to the Louisville football program.

Louisville football picked up another important commitment on Sunday afternoon, this time from four-star linebacker Stanquan Clark. Before we get into that, I wanted to clean up a few housekeeping things.

It it nice to meet you all, my name is Grant Mulligan, and I will be covering Louisville football recruiting for the State of Louisville! I previously worked as a recruiting assistant for the Louisville Football program from 2019 to 2021. My main role within the recruiting office was player evaluation. In my two years there I have evaluated hundreds of players and dozens at every position. I have assisted with the hosting of 25+ recruiting events. I also assisted Coach Gunter Brewer and the wide receiver room with game prep, putting together teach tape film, and preparing their weekly game binders

I look forward to bringing you all some top-quality recruiting content.

With that out of the way, lets get into the analysis.

What the film says

Clark is a former safety turned linebacker, reminiscent of another popular former Cardinal linebacker, CJ Avery. Much like Avery, Clark plays the game with passion and is not afraid to lower his shoulder and lay a hit on the ball carrier. He does well to plug gaps and swallow up ball carriers coming in between the tackles. His playmaking ability stretches beyond just stout run support, he has also proven to be a valuable asset against the pass, picking off two passes and registering 4 sacks during his junior season. He has excellent physical tools to work with and starter-level athleticism.

He is still new to the linebacker position, however, and thus has some rawness to his game that he will have to work through before becoming a consistent playmaker for the Cardinal defense. Learning to trust his instincts will help speed up his reaction time against both the run and the pass and getting to his landmarks faster will result in even more tackles for loss and turnovers caused.

Additionally, he could stand to clean up his tackling technique and drive through the hips, he currently tends to aim high and deliver hits to the chest/shoulder region. I have no doubt that Coach Derek Nicholson has a plan for his development, and I see Clark as an impact starter for the Cardinal defense sooner rather than later.

What the commitment means

Louisville returns to the Miami pipeline, this time to add an impact defender, after adding William Fowles, a talented playmaker to the receiver room last week. Miami has long been a recruiting hotbed for the Cards, and an important one to maintain.

Their recent success also highlights the effectiveness of the new additions to the recruiting staff, specifically Coach “Hova”[John Herron], who has deep ties to the Miami area. The continued momentum we have seen in this 2023 class is no accident and is reflective of the increase of resources devoted to building a strong, well-rounded recruiting staff.

The early returns are strong and adding an elite linebacker talent to a defense in need of quality playmakers is just the return-on-investment Satterfield and Co. were hoping for.
