Louisville women’s basketball: Marist Preview

The postseason run for Louisville women’s basketball begins on Monday with Marist. Previewing the Cards and the Red Foxes.

The University of Louisville Women’s basketball team begins its title run in San Antonio on Monday evening against Marist. The Cardinals received the two-seed in the Alamo region after finishing the season 23-3 (14-2 in the ACC).

The ACC tournament runners-up have their sights set on cutting down the nets but will need to take things a game at a time. With that being said, let’s take a look at Louisville’s first-round opponent.

Team: 15th-seeded Marist

Conference: MAAC (automatic bid)

Record: 18-3 (13-3 in conference)

When: Monday, March 22nd, 2021 at 8:00 PM

Players to Watch:

-#24 Sarah Barcello (Jr, 5-foot-11, guard); 12.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.5 SPG

-#5 Trinasia Kennedy (So, 5-foot-8, guard); 9.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG

-#10 Caitlin Weimar (Fr, 6-foot-4, forward); 8.8 PPG, 7.5 RPG

A Further Look

Marist is 194th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 63.6 points per contest; the Red Foxes boast a balanced rotation with five players scoring over seven points per game.

Louisville should not have a ton of trouble on the defensive side of the ball, nor does Marist utilize a ton of size. However, the latter’s claim to fame is the impeccable defense; the Red Foxes rank second in the NCAA in scoring defense (50 PPG allowed).

Despite the fact that Marist has not played an opponent comparable to Louisville, that is still an impressive feat.

Regardless, the Cards need to get Dana Evans going early after the Naismith Player of the Year finalist struggled from the field in the ACC conference tournament.
