From The Pink Seats Podcast returns to break down the Luke McCaffrey addition with Nebraska writer/podcaster, Erin Sorensen.
Rolling into week four of spring practice, Matt and I sat down to discuss all things Louisville football. Most notably, the addition of a former four-star, top-300 ranked quarterback via the transfer portal.
Luke McCaffrey, who announced his intent to transfer to Louisville last week, is one of the more interesting transfers that has committed in quite some time. Thanks to his lineage, hype as an elite high school prospect, and the flashes shown on the field, McCaffrey is a prospect worth talking about.
Luke McCaffrey talk
In order to get a better perspective on why McCaffrey left, what he went through at Nebraska, and what he could bring to the Louisville roster, we went to the experts. We were joined by Erin Sorensen of Hail Varsity who covers the Huskers, to talk much more in-depth about the interesting transfer.
If you’ve been listening to the podcast & reading our work here at The State of Louisville, you know that the recruiting of the QB position has had some interesting twists and turns this offseason. Not bringing in an experienced “true QB” was a decision that left many fans, including myself, scratching their heads.
With Malik Cunningham and Evan Conley being the only scholarship QB’s for spring (Shai Werts is listed as a WR/QB, but by all accounts will play WR), the Cards desperately needed depth. The addition of McCaffrey not only provides that but also another intriguing weapon who should fill multiple position voids short-term. As well as a raw athlete with tons of potential who could eventually develop into the quarterback in waiting, post-Cunningham.

The turnover/decision-making issues (6 int’s in two seasons) lack of consistent playing time (2 starts, 11 appearances), and up and down performance are all reasons to wonder if this move will ever pan out. However, the raw athleticism, football instincts, and natural arm ability far outweigh the bad and should make fans (and Coach Pete Thomas) extremely excited.
Erin gave great perspective on McCaffrey’s ability and what went down at the quarterback position to lead to transfer. Not only did she nail the pronunciation of Louisville, but she was able to provide great detail as to why McCaffrey could succeed and why there will be barriers.
From The Pink Seats Discussion Includes:
