Big Three
1 – Does Riley Leonard play?
If Riley Leonard, Duke’s star QB is unable to go how does it change the trajectory of this matchup? Presley, Matt, and Vince look at the FSU to get an idea of what Duke is with Leonard under center and when Henry Belin IV is taking snaps. Leonard being out would change the trajectory of this game and opens up a completely different conversation about beating Duke. However, if he does go what’s the impact? The guys explore.
2 – Can Jack Plummer return to BC/Notre Dame Jack Plummer?
Louisville didn’t lose to Pittsburgh solely because of Jack Plummer. The two turnovers were a big blow but all the way until the final minutes of the game the Cards had a chance. It was without denying Plummer’s worst game of the season and maybe one of the worst since leaving Purdue.
There’s no denying Plummer has been average in most games for Louisville committing far too many turnovers, missing wide receivers on open throws, and shooting the offense in the foot with silly penalties and mistakes. Against BC and Notre Dame, two games where the Cards handled their business, Plummer threw for a combined 35/45 (77% completion percentage) for 533 yards, 6 TD’s and 0 INTs. In Louisville’s lone loss and other games decided by seven points or less (excludes Murray State) Plummer is a combined 81/141 (57% completion percentage) for 1,121 yards, 6 TD’s (3 against GT) and 6 INT’s. Only dropping one game has more to do with the defense and other playmakers than Plummer. Jeff Brohm needs the fifth year senior to show more and do more to help Louisville win. If not, there may need to be a larger conversation at the QB position.
3 – Louisville football’s health concerns
The injury bug hasn’t been kind to Louisville the last few weeks. On Monday it was announced that veteran offensive guard Renato Brown would be out for the rest of the season due to an injury suffered in pregame warmups ahead of Pitt. There was little to no update on the availability of Jawhar Jordan. While Jarvis Brownlee is working to recover from a nagging injury that flared up in the matchup against Pittsburgh. The Cards of course are also missing star safety MJ Griffin, who is out for the year, and have seen injuries to several other key contributors including Mason Reiger, Josh Minkins Jr., Maurice Turner, and Jamari Thrash. The bye week should help the Cards bounce back to better health but the status of Jordan, Louisville’s leading rusher, remains a massive concern. If Jaws is unable to go against Duke, the Cards will have to rely more on Isaac Guerendo, Turner, the legs of Plummer, and even guys like Keyjuan Brown and receivers’ Ahmari Huggins-Bruce and Kevin Coleman to move the sticks out of the backfield. They have the depth but Brohm has to trust it unlike what we saw in the second half against Pittsburgh.
