Louisville women’s basketball assistant coach Jonneshia Pineda joined Off The Walz Podcast to talk a variety of topics.
It’s been a busy offseason not only for Off the Walz Podcast (check out the Summer Series here) but also for the Louisville women’s basketball program. Following another trip to the Final Four and a season filled with so many highs, Head Coach Jeff Walz had a ton to juggle when it came to putting together a full roster and coaching staff for the new season. As Brian Trent detailed for State of Louisville, the Cards dealt with a little bit of everything this offseason – seeing great success and great loss.
Even knowing it was coming, saying good bye to Emily Engstler and Kianna Smith was a tough pill to swallow. For most programs, losses of their caliber typically lead to rebuilding seasons or at least years in which the ceiling isn’t as high. That won’t be the case for the Cards in 2022-23, even though they weren’t the only ones on the way out. Also gone were Chelsie Hall (who also graduated) and expected but unexpected transfers Romani Parker & Ahlana Smith, both of whom ended up with Sam Purcell in Starkville. Speaking of which, the losses weren’t just to the roster. Gone were Sam Purcell as well as fan favorite Beth Burns. That left holes in the coaching staff and big decisions for Walz.
Coach Jonneshia Pineda was on the other side of one of those big decisions, as she was promoted to associate coach for the Cards. Coming off of that promotion, Coach Pineda joined Off The Walz hosts Brian Trent & Alyx White to talk about the 2021 season, working with Jeff Walz, player/coaching losses, as well as each of the new players.
